Cleanest Cities in India, 2010
As per a study conducted by the Ministry of urban development, Chandigarh emerged as the cleanest city in the country with a rating of 73.48 points for sanitation. Mysore, the second largest city in Karnataka, has been declared as the second most cleanest city in India. This rating was conducted on 423 cities in India to provide awareness and set a base line for cleanliness. These 423 cities had a population of more than 100,000. Benchmarks for the ratings were based on wastewater treatment, universal access to toilets to all including the poor...etc., The basic aim of the benchmarks were to protect the public from health hazards and to keep the environment clean. The rankings of the top 10 cities is given in the image. Click on it to view it in large size. Other smaller cities like Jamshedpur, Mandya and Bidar were placed among the top 25 because these cities were smaller and easier to manage. The only metro to show up in the top 10 was Delhi while Bangalore was placed at 12th spot. Chennai was at 13th place below Bangalore. Calcutta which is known as the dirtiest metropolis in India managed 25th place while Mumbai was placed at 45th spot. Obvously the cities at the bottom of the list were from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. A hefty amount of 3.5 crores were spent for the study to get a knowledge about the cleanliness of these 423 cities. Hope it doesn't stop with the study alone.

Willingdon Island is in Ernakulam district of Kerala located in south India. Its an artificial man made island made from the materials dredged while deepening Kochi port. The island is named after Lord Wellingdon, governor of Madras, who was a part of the project. A port hostel was initially built for the passengers to stay for few nights and was later named as the Malabar Hotel. The Royal Air Force constructed a large aerodrome there after 1940. When the British left India in 1947 they left an indispensable transport hub. The aerodrome was later extensively developed and it became the city's modern air port. Its one of the major ports in India and a landmark in the city of Cochin, Kerala. Willingdon island is connected to the main land by road and rail routes. The island has some of the best hotels, commercial and industrial offices on it. The island is the hub of activity with number of offices, branches of national and international banks, travel agencies..etc., One can not miss this island after visiting the city of Cochin for the first time.

The Indian currency notes, coins, computer keyboards, mobiles, softwares... etc., will be embedded with the newly designed symbol. The symbol was designed by  the IIT post-graduate Uday Kumar. He would be receiving 2.5 lakhs for designing the symbol. There were 3000 designs that were available for selection among which Uday Kumar's symbol got selected. The symbol is a mix of the Devanagri ''Ra'' and Roman ''R''. Indian rupee is the 5th currency in the world that would be identified by a symbol. The others are US dollar, British pound-sterling, Euro and Japanese yen to have its own symbol.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have excelled as the centres of technical learning for decades and this year too, they occupy seven places in the list of best ten engineering colleges in the India. This year, IIT-Kanpur jumped two positions up to be on the top, pushing last year's leader IIT-Delhi into the second place.

IIT-Kanpur started in a room in the Canteen Building of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute at Agricultural Gardens in Kanpur with just 100 students, but today, in its golden jubilee year, it has 4,500 students with the student-teacher ratio being 10:1.

Almost all the IITs in India have good facilities and good student-staff ratio which is more important for good colleges. A special placement cell in all these colleges ensure 100 percent for the students in the respective colleges. Before a student enters any college he/she or his/her parents should make sure that some of these facilities are present in the college to ensure a bright and better future to the students when they pass out from the colleges.

To put it simple, the national animal, panthrea tigris, of India is at stake. If this problem is left unattended then we might see the extinction of the entire species in India. This is experienced not only in India but this is happening all over the world. 40000 was the strength of the Indian tiger population at the beginning of this century and don't be surprised to know that only 1411 tigers are present in India at present. Statistics say that in 2009 alone 86 deaths have been reported. With 37 tiger sanctuaries in India, about 17 of them are on the verge of tiger extinction.

The tigers in India are not only facing natural deaths but their lives are endangered by the human population. What we should do to save tigers? We should stop pouching tigers and also stop depleting the tiger habitats. If these two are avoided then the tigers will have a happy life out there in the forests.

How you can contribute to save tigers in our country? An awareness program has been started in India to stop pouching of tigers and depletion of their habitats. You can write about saving tigers in India in blogs like I have done or you can use twitter, facebook ..etc to pass on this message. Friends, if we neglect this for another 10 years I think we wont have any tiger left in our country and our country should have a different national animal.
