List of Most Populous Cities in India 2010

India is the second largest populous country in the world next only to China. Here the country's most populous cities are given with their estimated population (not the urban agglomeration). 

With a little less than 14 million citizens Mumbai stands out as the most populous city in the world. Next to it comes the national capital of the country (Delhi) which has a population of around 12.5 million. The population of New Delhi is not included to Delhi's population. The IT capital (Bangalore) of India is the third most populous in the list with only around 5.5 million citizens. The city attracts people from different parts of the country and people with different mother tongues can be found in the city. Kolkata and  Chennai are the other two cities in the list in the top five with 5.1 and 4.6 million respectively. 

Including the top 5 cities in the country there are 43 cities totally with a population of more than 1 million.
